How do you diagnose and treat hypertension?

Hypertension is categorized as prehypertension, stage 1 hypertension and stage 2 hypertension, explains Mayo Clinic. Blood pressure readings ranging from 120 to 139 mmHg or a 80 to 89 mmHg diastolic pressure reading indicates prehypertension. A diastolic pressure reading ranging from 90 to 99 mmHg and a 140 to 159 mmHg systolic pressure reading indicates stage 1 hypertension, and stage 2 hypertension has readings of a 160 mmHg systolic pressure reading and a diastolic pressure reading beginning at 100 mmHg. Multiple blood pressure readings are taken on different days before diagnosing an individual with hypertension.
