The flu season is around again and is taking its toll on each and everyone. The flu is naturally a very discomforting condition as its symptoms vary from mild (general feel to discomfort) to severe (difficulty breathing). Everyone seems to suffer from the consequences of flu, yet not everybody can find a remedy to the problem. If you are one of those people who has been looking for a solution and never found any, you just might be amazed at the findings of this new study. The study concludes that natural remedies could be best when it comes to helping treat flu symptoms.
Pelargonium sidoides is a South African herb that has been approved for the treatment of respiratory conditions like bronchitis. The herb is known to have antiviral effects and works excellently well in that domain. Published in the journal Antiviral Research, a new study shows that this natural herb could someday be able to deal with some drug-resistant strains of the flu virus. The study was conducted by the Institute of Immunology at the Center of Public Health Research at National Laboratory of Health, Luxembourg. The researchers tested the plant’s antiviral effects in both lab tests and in living subjects.
The findings were encouraging; Pelargonium sidoides is effective against major viruses like the H1N1, H3N2, and the laboratory H1N1 strain A/Puerto Rico/8/34. Much research has not been concentrated on the herb, but the promising results of this study could make it a firsthand choice for flu treatment and control.
Inhibiting an early step in the influenza infection process and at the same time impairing the virus’ normal activity required for virus survival seemed to be the magical method this herb uses to thrive. This it did rather than directly attack the virus. Simply put, the extract worked against the flu viruses by impairing their life cycle.
More research would need to be carried out to bring full details of the efficacy of this herb, but researchers think it is a breakthrough in the search for a natural remedy to flu symptoms.
